THE SILVER LINING - Ange Cleary Style mentor 45+

Updated: Nov 6

There are fifty shades of grey and I'm not talking about the raunchy kind.

I'm talking about going grey girls.......With the milestone movement of "no-makeup" proudly worn by Pammy Anderson (high five: incredible step forward), the rise of the silverfox and many woman on our feeds celebrating their grey glory in all it's multi-dimesional stages. I absolutely love this, I do BUT what's good for others may not be good for you. Embracing your personal style is simply what it comes down to, not media pressures or trends. Whether that means rocking your grey hair or opting for colour till you're 90, it is all about what makes you feel good. Aging is a unique journey for everyone, and there are no hard and fast rules. I have had many chats with my girlfriends and clients on this topic, so what’s your take on it? grey or nay....

The things I can guarantee as we age is that everything changes it's natural tone - your skin, eye, hair body tone and of course much more. If we threw back to what the human body is designed to do naturally and what we do as a society to combat these things we would all be walking around like hairy neanderthals. Whether you're dying your hair, using skincare, doing your nails, shaving your legs, waxing your brows, tinting your lashes, wearing lipstick or buying a pretty dress for a party let's face it on some level you're still maintaining or preserving your image. This is not vanity it's self worth and should purely be done for you and nobody else. The varying degrees of acceptance in aging is where we may unravel.

Hear me out - Unfortunately there is a very very small percentage of people that will expose a beautiful silvery crown with most of us revealing a very unflattering collage of mismatched, dull and lifeless grey. It will depend on your heritage, skin tone, level of pigment left in your natural hair, DNA and genetics. The raw truth is that grey as a stand alone colour isn't flattering on most skin tones and can easily zap all vitality and vibrance from your face. My encouragement purely from a self image focus encouraging self worth would be if you are going grey start to introduce more colour into your wardobe, play around with fun accessories, get friendly with a good dewy skin tint/bronzer plus add rosy cheek and lip shades to your everyday makeup routine. Follow your heart at all times, quieten the mind chatter and don't let others version of empowerment navigate your personal decisions. The style couch is just a succession of conversations that go on behind the scences and I am bringing those conversations to share with you. You do you. Going grey should be because you have decided that it's right for you and you want the freedom that comes with that personal choice.

Pros and Cons of Going Grey

  • Pros:

    • Acceptance and embracing the natural process.

    • Potentially lower maintenance and cost in terms of hair color upkeep.

  • Cons:

    • Personal discomfort or self judgment.

    • The potential of looking or feeling older then you are and less vibrant.

    • The stages of growing out your colour can be a very long process
